Habit Building - Success can be trained

If you google the definition of success, this is what comes up: “success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”. And this is the exact meaning of success I am talking about in this post. You may have different definitions of it relating more to steep careers, making a sh!t tonne of money, having a house and two kids, or it may be more intrinsically motivated like happiness, fulfillment, and peace.

But for the sake of this article, let’s stick with it is an accomplishment of an aim or purpose, and the fact the said accomplishment can be trained.

If you wonder “how”, keep on reading because you are at the right place. However, I do want to invite you to keep an open mind when reading and be willing to learn and see things from different perspectives. I am 100% sure you will get something out of this!

In short, what it takes to accomplish anything in life, is to take consistent steps forward that are aligned with your higher self.

Let’s dissect this a little bit.

First up, your higher self is your best self, future self, inner guidance, and calling. It is what fuels your desires, passions, and purpose. If you were to take your life right now and imagine it being in the best form possible, that makes you feel excited and simply amazing. That is your higher self showing you where you can go. It is your inner leader who has access to all your potential and abilities to achieve anything you put your mind and heart to.

How to access your higher self:

  • get into a state of flow (remind yourself whenever you were in a peak experience)

  • do what excites you and makes you happy, and really take in that feeling of joy in life

  • get in touch with your intuition, trust your gut when making decisions and you will see it will always be the right one (even if it may not look like it at first or to others!)

Secondly, consistency is key. It is what we do daily, our routines, automatic behaviours, and (sub-)conscious habits that rule our life. It is every single repetition we get in every single day, that in the long run makes the difference. Hence why when it comes to dieting, it is crucial to eat healthy on a consistent basis for great long-term results, and why one day of “cheating” every couple of months doesn’t do any harm. However, if it were the other way around it makes sense this would be detrimental to our health and body, right?

How to be consistent:

  • make it a game to work on your book or project at least 51% of the time you told yourself you would do it. Win the majority vote

  • start small, use an existing cue, or create a new one that will get you ready to go. For example, put your gym clothes on, then go, or make a coffee and put your headphones on and get to do the focused work

  • it does not matter if you spend 1 minute or one hour on it, EVERY little step counts

Last but not least, keep reminding yourself of why you do this, what is your mission, what impact will it have on your and other people’s lives, how it makes you feel once you accomplished it, and how it makes you feel making progress towards it. Have your purpose always in front of you, set daily intentions to get closer to it, embody the feeling of having already achieved it, and keep going. Every. Single. Day.

I do want to point out another important factor, which is that you got to allow yourself to do this with ease, don’t spend too much time focusing on the worries that creep up, what could go wrong, what others think, or if you had a bad day. Bad days are normal, again, it is the majority of days that counts. Other people may always have an opinion, but it never matters, unless you make it so. Worries are there to show you what to focus on to make it right, but never to make you stop. And putting too much stress on your shoulders to accomplish takes the fun out of the ride.

Give yourself permission to enjoy it.
